As mentioned in this thread, I’d been looking forward to jumping back into art once retired and I’ve indeed done some artwork, most notably designing game tiles for The Legion game, as well as some at-home sketching. I plan to still get in front of my massive wood easel and work with water mixable oil paints, but the studio out in the backyard is still a work in progress.
However, with the inspiration gained with working with alcohol ink markers (on that aforementioned wargame tiles project), I’ve decided to jump back into Watercolors! Different medium, but lots of correlations too. Watercolors are much more accessible, not only in materials and gear, but portability. Plus, they can easily be combined with pen & ink, as well as permanent markers, so there is no reason not to jump into the deep end of the pool!!! In this regard, my wife was lovely in ordering me a field easel I saw used by an artist in The Artist Magazine, in an issue that featured field en plein air work ands methods by artists over 60… hey, that was timing!! There were several kits used by these amazing artists, but the easel that caught my eye was from En Plein Air Pro - Artists Easels.
Traveler Series Watercolor Package includes:
* Total Package Weight: 8.5lbs./3.86kg.
An absolutely gorgeous gear option from top to bottom. I do own an old fashioned French Easel, but those are bulky and heavy, and geared to oils and acrylics type mediums, painting on canvas or heavy board panels. This is perfect for sheets of paper, whole watercolor pads and books, or even artist clip boards. Fast setup and easy to transport. Perfect!
An added bonus is the actual easel working surface can be used with an attachable leg post, so as to use on any table.
The Tripod is a state of the art unit made by SLIK, a reputable and know tripod company; this U874 tripod made exclusively for En Plein Air Pro.
Though I own a tripod for my digital camera, it was a cheapo bought at a flea market, which I had to buy and mount a new camera mount to. This SLIK tripod is much better.
I’m looking forward to getting outdoors and creating artwork again… been many years and that was just pen & ink sketching in a handheld artist pad. I’ve never painted outdoors and this presents an awesome new adventure!!!
