As US readers probably know, Sergeant Rock and Sergeant Fury were American comic book war heroes back in the day. UK equivalent would be the many dauntless junior leaders featured in Commando and War Picture Library. Anyhow, if you want to add somewhat of that ambience to your game, consider the following:
Sergeant Rock - the Sergeant has 4 dice/ conditions to roll ( until wounded; wound procedure normal- each wound costs one condition until tended ).
Or:
Sergeant Fury- the Sergeant has 4 dice to roll and can alter the final facing of one of them! Marvel Comics presented Fury in a really over- the- top manner.
Under either variant, the three troopers still get one bonus die when activating on a tile with the sergeant present.
Here is my totally unofficial idea for an ambush scenario:
Ambush scenario: Use map 1. Special rules: 1) first, place your four troopers on any map tile or tiles in a hidden state. 2) then place one VC on each road tile ( total of 5 VC). Note that a VC might end up on the same tile as a trooper. That is permitted.
Take the first player turn. Any VC eliminated during the player phase during the first turn is NOT replaced, even when eliminated by gunfire or grenade. Then, during the first VC reaction phase, place 3 VC randomly. These ( and VC survivors from the first player turn) are replaced via. the usual rules when eliminated.
Player's objective is to kill 5 VC and escape to a tile or tiles on the SOUTH edge of the board. As always, loss of even one SAS trooper loses the game.
If you want to simulate total surprise, no VC act at all during turn one; although the three VC reinforcements are still placed.
I've played this variant scenario a couple of times ( both with and without the Sergeant Rock rule) and it can go brilliantly or turn sideways in a hurry.
Ghosts of the Jungle is a really fun game for when time ( or patience with complexity) is limited! I've been enjoying it thoroughly.
