This is my 4th Mike Lambo book and it looks like another home run, to me anyway. The XL refers to more hexes, 48 as compared to 28, also a Lt. that among other things can call in artillery, 3 rifle squads, bazooka, mortar and sniper. Turns increased from 10 to 14. The counters as provided in the book, again a small craft project that was done in under an hour. Excuse the shadow.

Some of the counters made up. Learning the mechanics. You roll for German placement, and as it turned out I ended up with a solid wall of Germans right in front of the start position. By the time turn 8 was over I was down 2 of the 3 rifle squads and I ended the game right there.

Looks awesome… I’ve got the regular edition and it looks awesome. I certainly like the more hexes and other extras! I love these book games…I was talking to Bill Thomas, owner of Compass Games, and he was saying to a group of gamers between games at an expo a couple years back, that he just can’t understand te appeal of book wargame. I butted in, saying, they’re wonderful for a quick-ish afternoon or morning game, great for travel, can fill in the gaps waiting between games at expos like his, and so on; that they are super versatile and easy to transport… though I don’t think I changed his (and the rest of the group sitting there that day) mind, it did make him think.

Lambo's book sales should get him thinking that maybe there is a place for book games. Not to mention the plethora of other solotaire book games that have come on the market since.
This is my first of his Normandy games and I really like this isn't the bucket of dice chuckers they can be, 2 D6 does the job. Making it my #1 choice for a travel game. Plus they're solo. This appears to be their real niche.
I understand he is working on a Kursk game now where you play the Russians. Might be interesting.

His games were likely my first foray into Book Games, as I can’t think of anything close to these other than the demo game from Lock ‘N Load Publishing’s, “Band of Heroes” original pdf download. So far, I’ve picked up three Lambo books, and one download from WargamerVault.
