In another thread, Mike mentioned that if he had cards as nice as the DVG “Leader” game pictured in a dealing display tray, he ‘…might have to sleeve them’! I loved that comment, ‘cause I so relate!!! It’s been a little journey for me, to switch to sleeving my games’ cards.
I must admit, I’d shied away from sleeving cards; part of that is I’m a creature of habit, and as a Pisces, I hate change …I’ve always played card games with the cards naked, so to speak…and even when I got into Wargames that feature card driven mechanics, I’d not sleeved them. It was firstly, at recent wargame expos, where I saw many gamers that sleeved their cards… and also, playing a friend from Connecticut who sleeves everything, that changed my mind.
It was a process, though: Initially, I was a bit freaked out at how the sleeves created air pockets that made the deck *higher* …I know, pretty anal! Then, I was a tad bothered by how slippery the cards were (remember, I don’t like change!). But I worked it all through my mind as, it’s pretty silly to be bothered by the increased deck height, and dang if the cards don’t shuffle better!
I think the thing that surprised me about the whole gig was, I had no idea there were so many different sizes; and no idea there were great brands and cheap brands…they’re card sleeves…how different can they be? Different! From bargain sleeves with thin mil thickness and a few bad-formed sleeves that aren’t cut all the way in the top, sprinkled in the pack; to premium sleeves that are thicker and more durable.
I used to buy Ultra-Pro, and they were fine. But then I started finding brands from Mayday Games, Dragon Shield, and most recently finding the Holy Grail… KMC (a Japanese brand), and my word, what a difference!
Like having become a Counter Clipper… I’m now a Sleever, too!
