I’ve taken to picking up plaques at Hobby Lobby, which are unfinished wood (looks to me like typically, pine wood) with smooth sanded surfaces, though the routered edges are a bit rough textured (easy enough to smooth down with some fine grain sandpaper). The example above is only $2.99 …I’ve picked up packs of three. That’s super cheap for a plaque! I used to use old award plaques, recycled for use for my model dioramas, but those can be pretty hard to come across at yard sales and flea markets, and you’re subject to odd sizes. These Hobby Lobby ones come in stock sizes that fit well with typical model scales. They also come in small sizes for miniatures displays. Michael’s Craft Store also has them. I’ll be doing some up soon and plan to use Folk Art acrylic paint on them…maybe a Future acrylic overcoat. I’ll post finished pics here.

I buy them myself. Nice to have. When I did my Panther retouch for a Winter camo, and addition of the diorama, I had no idea how to paint the base. I would have thought a stain and heavy lacquer the most plausible way to go, but that’s a bit too much work for me, personally (…yeah, I can be lazy, lol!). So that’s why I just grabbed a jar of Tamiya acrylics, “Red Brown”… …it came out OK; and I decided against a coat of Future to add some shine, simply because I ran out of time to deliver the build to the tour ai donated it to. Then I saw a YouTube vid, where a guy used Folk Art Acrylics, “Antique Bronze” straight out of the tube, with a foam craft paint applicator, and OMWord what a beautiful job it did! …to be honest, I was kinda shocked how good it looked. I went to Hobby Lobby a month or two ago looking for it and couldn’t find that color (if it even exists), but bought three alternatives that look close, which I’ll be trying.
