I stole this tip on airbrush use from a great modeler that goes by the handle Tobi, on work for a 1:48 Fokker Tri-plane… I’ve never used my airbrush down that low a psi, nor that close in, but I sure want to try it now, just so I know how to do it! His work… …that cockpit is amazing! Love that prop work, too. Truly brilliant stuff!!! I’ve wanted to do a tri-plane for a long while now, but I barely survived a bi-plane!

I've done this streaking on a 1/48 Dr1. I used a Tamiya acrylic base coat then diluted green enamel paint to about 70/30 thinners to paint and applied it with a flat brush using single strokes butted up against one another. The acrylic base when fully cured is impervious to anything except maybe acetone. Incidentally, there are now decals for this effect too. On one hand I think this is great because modellers of all experience levels can confidently tackle whatever finish they favour, but I also believe there are a lot of businesses taking the "modelling" out of modelling.

Great tip on the acrylic base for a diluted enamel top layering effects. You were my first inspiration for painting reality wood effects, which had a huge impact on me in terms of being proactive in working up my skills in said! I agree with your sentiments on the decals… kinda a similar thing in miniatures gaming where you can get minis pre painted, which takes the individualism out of the equation; what yiu end up with is not what you had to work to achieve, finish-wise. The side of the pro-conversation on that is, many do t have advanced skills and are happy enough to have the work done for them… but I like push myself to learn, expand, and achieve those results (…or damned close to).

Whitey, learning that an acrylic base was impervious to solvents used with enamel or oil paints changed everything for me. The first serious model I built and finished with this understanding was my DAK Panzer IV which you may remember (still need to finalise my photo account).

Trying my first image upload but also attempting to show results. 1/48 Eduard Spitfire Mk.VIII "Aussie Eight" Dual Combo (a SMASHING kit). Tamiya acrylic base colour with artist's oil paint effects. Everything from oil streaks to paint fading and panel line detail is basically hand painted on the acrylic "canvas". Now hoping the photo embed works...
