I’m stealing this one from Tony (tcoat), from his build thread on his P-38J Ancient Monogram build over at Modelers Social Club… Great tip on the wall plaster tape for a quick do for South Pacific runway mat! Looks great! Not sure the brand he uses but among the various tapes available, you can get a perforated version similar to this… I know Mike uses kitty litter to good effect; and railroad foliage I’ve used. …just brilliant work!

I wonder, looking at the diorama’s runway mat, if screen window screening would work, as well? I know it doesn’t have the typical round holes you normally see… …for the industrious minded, you could try and drill out each hole in the tape, as it’s easier than drilling a ton of holes in styrene sheet! I’m sure there are premade scale stuff in aftermarket, as well.

Nice P38 dio! As I think I told you my Dad was a Lightning mechanic in the Panama Canal Zone. I built that old Monogram kit for him and he kept it on a shelf in the kitchen for years until the day he passed.
Looks like he used a Dollar Store frame as his base, I have used a few of them myself.
Bong was a good old Wisconsin boy. Both the P38 and the P40 that is also in your post used the Allison engine.

Yes, I remember that… I didn’t remember the P-38 you built for him, though…would love to see a pic, if you have one! I had no knowledge of Bong until I saw that post…amazing stuff! And yeah, it’s amazing what you can use for a dio base! I’ve taken to buying unfinished pine plaques from Hobby Lobby (they built one in a shopping complex my wife goes to occasionally about 45 minutes east of us, so I’ll make a point to drop in there now and then); I rushed a dio through where I used Tamiya paint on (soaked it up like a fraking sponge! ), but I’m going to use Folk Art acrylics on future ones. You can get those plaques on the cheap!
