Race to Bastogne is a Mike Lambo book game on armor battles around Bastogne 1944. On this mission #11 you (Americans) need to reveal what German units are lurking in the towns and forest around Bastogne. This scenario gives you 4 Sherman's, 1 Priest for artillery support, and 1 Greyhound for recon. This is turn 2 and American units are poking the bear.

By turn #4 the Americans have all locations revealed other then a couple mine fields there are 2 infantry units, 2 PanzerIV across the bridge in the upper right and a single Panther supporting the infantry upper left. I feel pretty good about this.

Turn #7 finds the Americans have cleared all enemy units except the Panther tank cornered upper left.

Turn #8, the final turn finds the upper most Sherman move up to the Panther but unfortunately cannot fire leaving it up to the Sherman moving up from the bottom of the page. The last Sherman,on the last turn, fires the last shot, and rolls an 11 landing a kill shot on the Panthers side armor. Game over American victory.

I really like this Lambo offering… I love armor heavy games, anyway so this is right up my personal alley! I can’t remember …the counters come with the game? I’d be curious to see what GHQ minis look like on these maps! And of course, now it has me wondering about make tiles, hahaha! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: You’re a bad influence on me, Mike…thank you for that!

Hi Em, yes these are the counters that come with the game. And I also knew you would be thinking of tiles! I thought I would have this game locked up sooner as you can tell by my statement on turn 4 but those 2 PanzerIV's put up a good fight and I had a hard time getting a fire order roll, then the Priest got threatened when a Panzer moved up so I had to back the Priest out which put it out of range to support the Sherman and I thought every thing was going to go down the tubes.

The back and forth swings of battle make wargaming so exciting… and it shows that these “book” games really have a lot of tooth to them! …I’ve seen too many people dismiss the book games as over simplistic, but I’ve so far found, they are challenging in their own right.

I've only got the 2 GoJ and RfB but I agree about finding them both "challenging in their own right." also. I want to pick up another and am trying to make up my mind on whether to get Lone Sherman or Fields of Normandy 2. I'm sure I will end up with them both sooner or later but for now I will get one so as not to bounce around between the two not knowing which one to try first. I have the same problem when I buy more then one model kit at a time. And Assault on Vimy Ridge looks good too!

My troops took a real beating last night! Looks like I ran right into Piepers spearhead.

I get what you’re saying with the multiple games and kits… it’s like Christmas morning and what present to play with first! I’ve got four of Mike Lambo’s games so far, but I’ve stayed with the one (Ghosts of the Jungle) so far, as I have this thing about the concept of marking a rulebook with pencil marks for the moving units… actually, the thing is more the erasing! …between the eventual smudging and deterioration of the page from erasers, it just makes me cringe; it’s the flaw in my purchase strategy, hence my workaround with tiles, minis, or tokens use. But saying the last, what a great concept of those books in portability! My troops took a real beating last night! Looks like I ran right into Piepers spearhead. Yup… you found him!
