The second scenario in my Legion variant was a replay of Mission 2, “Through the Rocks”: U.S. Army “Green Berets” warriors of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), better known by their nickname, “The Legion” are deployed in country, Vietnam, on a reconnaissance mission far behind enemy lines. Sent out to scout, and determine enemy strength and positions, the Legionaries infiltrate a critical area that represents one of several, potential operational trouble spots. The mission of stealth is lead by Captain “Dix” Dixon (red), leading three Weapons Sergeants: “Coop” Cooper (white), “Enzo” Edleman (blue), and “Ziggy” Zigarelli (Yellow)…
The colors denoted above correlate to ring markers that sit around their bases to help keep track of who’s who; I have no idea what the plastic rings were from or went to…I found them in the basement of treasures!
This is the battle started off with the typical stealth movement (following random deployment by die roll, pictured above)…
…it’s a cool scenario, because of all those rocky hills and clear areas causing bottlenecks. You, as the Green Berets start off with good options for scoot-duck-and-cover, but as your move into those bottlenecks, the VC can appear from nowhere all around you… with more coming! With too much ground to cover within those bottlenecks, it’s a challenging course to maneuver. I really like this scenario a lot! It’ll be cool to see the next ones!
So as you can see, Dix, Coop, and Ziggy made it to the exfil row at the top of the map; Dix flying up the board…I felt kinda guilty at that …and Ziggy had some hairy moments with VC jumping in his zone, and deciding whether to shoot and become known position, or hold his breath and hope Charlie boogied out (Zig did the latter and capped his ass).
…but in the end, poor Enzo just couldn’t break away from Charlie all around him and hunting him down like a dog.
It was the Legion’s first loss in four games played and not their finest hour…I should have had one of the guys stay behind with him when he took the first bullet, so that’s on my at the Command Post (fu@king Generals!).
Actually, it was kinda a relief, as the other three games were all won, hard fought, but won, and I was wondering, “OK, how hard is it to loose?” Well, admittedly in those games, the luck was on the Legion’s side, however in this game, there were more Charlie reinforcements, and a couple VC “Hunt” rolls while they were either on or adjacent to a Green Beret ground pounder… ultimately, it was a VC hunt that killed Enzo (blue) and resulted in immediate game loss for the Americans. I’ll be curious to see, as I play, how difficult it is to win.
I was wondering, leading up to this playing, how this would play with an opponent… actually, I think pretty well! Since the solo version Americans really depend on dice roll for actions, it would be easy for a second player to take the VC and do the rolling instead if me…I think it might be a little less exciting for the second player, but there would still be an enjoyable experience.
