One of my goals going into retirement last March was to get back into my hobbies in a big way! …model building was at the top of the list. I’d mistakenly thought that I could jump right in and start slopping glue, but I failed account for how bad I was broken. We often do not realize how bad a shape we are in (mentally) until after the hurricane has past, and brother and sisters, the last four to five years was a typhoon from Hell! I was told by several wise human beings (and maybe two cats) that you need a year of nothing to Recover… which meant plenty of rest, recovery of self, retool of self, and refit. Jeez is that true!
Whereas I’ve managed to get wargaming in track in the time side gaining freedom from Da Man, other hobbies had foundered in taking hold. However, another major one has bitten and I’m glad to say, took off like a rocket! …model kit building
One of the things that have helped tremendously was a recruitment email from a very good, now friend named Joe, to come back to a Modeling forum that I was still a member of, but had drifted away from. It is going through a long retool process, after having sunk into inaction for unknown reasons, and members are flocking back, as well as new members. I’m happy to see it, and support it, as it was one of my favorites back in the day. The name of this forum is Modelers Social Club, and can be found here. I encourage you to check it out, as there is great stuff there.
I’ve seen Social Media absolutely obliterate the world of forums over the past decade, with so many great sites taken down. People want instant gratification and love the disheveled world of a Facebook, for instance. A lot of corporations and groups of every kind find it weaker and more colts effective (as in, free) to just start a Group there; but social media pales greatly when you see what a forum can do for in-depth conversation and ability to have easily searched and full threads of knowledge to pay forward yiu loved hobby. So, I will gladly support our sister forums out there, because I think there’s room for all of us… and more is better!
Now yes, I selfishly hope our own Modeling section gains popularity and increases membership, but there’s no reason you can’t cross-post! …with an occasional link back to each other, when appropriate and not over done.
I was talking to a friend who came to visit just a week ago, about how I’d missed the camaraderie, inspiration, knowledge base, and lessons in craftsmanship I use to get for model kit building and painting that I once got at such forums as Armchair General and World War Two Zone, two fine forums lost to the ages, with all its amazing threads of knowledge lost to the ages. There are a few survivors on modeling and wargaming forums out there, but they are far and few between, and often lacking on many of them. Embrace the survivors, and support them… the boon is, you have a ton more fun in which to partake! Win Win!!!
***That is all***
