Playing this game once again, but this time with miniatures, on my homemade terrain tiles! I rolled for the 3 starting Viet Cong placement and placed on the map, who’ll face off against my four American commandos… Rolling for SAS placement involves rolling 1-die, 1-5 corresponding to bottom row tiles left to right, and 6 being Player's Choice of placement. Sgt. Allen and Buns ended up together on column starting tile one (count tile columns left to right in order), which is a boon for Buns, as he gets an extra die being with the Sarge! …Dix is next to them in tile two, and for Clarkey next to him on tile three. This scenario is underway!

Buns moved up, shot the VC in the hits area and then moved into the huts area in the clearing… VCs heard the shot and a VC activates in a Hut tile to the upper right. Dix had a bad roll and ended up staying in place, but Sarge and the remaining two commandos end up in the double hut tile together… not a terribly bad position, since the VC can’t see them from so far away, so it’s a quick move up! They need to start moving ahead more stealthily from this point forward, though…

Dix was able to move up a tile, but Sarge and his mate are still stuck in the village; meanwhile Buns is luckily, hidden in jungle as the VC end up all around him! …but he’s close to the top row, where all four need to get to (with no VC in their ending tile…

Buns makes to the top row, but he has to try and hide, like, SOON! Sarge is stuck. Dix is stuck in a rice paddie and needs two moves to get out. Clarkey had to shoot a VC, which activated a VC further back to the right of a swamp tile, and Clarkey is now hidden midway up center of map…

Buns is able to hide in the Jungle at map top. Clarkey is able to move up two tiles and hide in the jungle. Sarge is still stuck in the village! Dix is out of the rice paddies but in the open. VC advance…

Sarge catches a break and moves up and around right of the rocky hill and hides in the jungle! …a VC is in front of him so he’s holding his breath!!! Clarkey moves to the top row, right of Buns and hides in the jungle. Dix is stuck in the village hut above the rice paddies, in the open and hoping to get the hell out. VC at map left moves up and is harmless for the moment. The VC that was to the front of Sarge moves to the Sarges right and is now in from to Dix…and the VC that was back a bit further moves up and next to his pal so, Dix is swearing bullets and looking for cover! Aaaaand, to make matters worse, a VC Sniper shot rings out from somewhere and Dix takes a bullet… he’s wounded (three hits and he’s dead and game over!)

A wonder Dix dives into a village hut as two VC approach his position… he thinks he just made it before being spotted, and the lack of bullets would indicate he has a chance. He assesses his wound and hope Sarge saw his plight and may be able to get to him soon, but he’s literally caught between a rock and a hard place, with an impassable rocky hill to his left, the VC will either come straight through his position, or if he’s lucky, maybe they’ll just bypass him. He holds his breath and grits his teeth as he patches himself up best he can with his med kit. Meanwhile, Sarge, having indeed seen Dix in trouble, tosses a grenade out of his hidden jungle position taking out the two VC! He can almost hear Dix exhale a little from where he is! …a hearing the grenade blast, a VC pops out to Sarges upper right, but it’s harmless for the moment, and the tally of the VC is one man bye bye. Buns and Clarkey stay put. The VC at the left flank moves right, into the two hut tile and the other moves left into a hut tile open area…

Over the next two turns (my iPad froze and I lost the AAR report for that move) had Sarge move down to Dix’s position, but there wasn’t room in the hut for him and he was horribly exposed; so Dix decided to hightail it out up and to the left into a jungle hiding spot, with Sarge following behind up one tile and into a hut. The forward VC moved all the way to the far map end (bottom map); his buddy, thinking he heard something moved back, adjacent to Dix’s position, listening intently…

On the next turn, Sarge and Dix are holding position, as do the guys. The VC at bottom shifts right, sniffing around; and the a VC that activated going into this turn in the tile with the other VC atop of map moved with that guy, away from Dix…

Next turn, the guys hold position; VC move away from the Gus. Next turn, Dix and Sarge move forward a bit more and hide…Dix is determined to protect his Sergeant from putting him in harms way…

Next turn, Sarge and Dix can’t move, but the VC get farther away. Next turn, same. Next turn, Dix, followed by Sarge make it to the Victory Row with the other guys, VChas one redeploy to a hut area, but still way away from the Americans, one moves to a corner at map bottom and the other one is stuck in place. Americans win! I definitely like playing this game with the miniatures on the terrain tiles… it adds a ton of thematic flare and flavor, and is just plain… more fun! I think I’m going to paint a small edge section of the four Americans a different color each, to better tell who each one is…not necessarily needed for straight play, but in writing an AAR, it was a bit of a task to keep them straight on who was who (at least Sarge was easy, as he’s the only one on a knee).

Excellent report and congrats on the win. I love this game, it has a nice stealthy feel to it. You actually find yourself holding your breath when victor charlie rustles the bush around your man.

Excellent report and congrats on the win. I love this game, it has a nice stealthy feel to it. You actually find yourself holding your breath when victor charlie rustles the bush around your man. Thanks my friend! I really like this game, too. Though using the RISK pieces worked very well, and makes it a great travel game, the “feel” of the game is that much better with miniatures… as you say, the ‘hold your breath” moments are plentiful, with the random positioning of VC deployment often popping them up where you least want to see them; and the criteria for activating VC on gun shot and grenade blasts, or on getting caught in the open really makes the game hard to predict, as well as making you change your strategy on unit progression. The tiles add to the feel and make it much more cinematic. Since this playing, I actually lightened the color up of the bases, as the ground color of the figure bases was too dark…it was harder to see the figures, as they blended in too well, with the Fender washer bases. I also tried placing a bit of color on the side of the American bases, so I can better tell which character is which. I also started a thread on supercharging this update into more of its own game! …with Green Berets!

OMG, this looks amazing! I take back what I said about wanting to see 3D tiles. This looks really fancy!
