Beginning to play Hungarian Nightmare by Against the Odds (ATO) Magazine. A game of the Soviet attack and ensuing siege of Budapest. Picture shows mainly the west side or Buda side of the Danube River while Pest lies to the east side of the Danube. Opening air and artillery by the Soviets are completed.

Here comes Ivan! Pest side pictured. As you can see this is an area movement game but with a few twists.

Magazine cover. This is my third ATO Magazine game and I have found them all to be quite impressive.

Simultaneous reading on the subject of the battle itself and the relief effort. The Russians ended up needing to move divisions out of the battle for Budapest to confront the German relief effort.

I’ve never mentioned this before, but this is one of the things I admire most about your gaming methodology… you include reading in the side to do a deep dive into the history of the subject battle! That’s so cool!!! I like the bombardment markers… super nice look to them. I take it that’s off board artillery missions not from counter specific units, but rather artillery batteries *somewhere* from the right direction? I’ve heard great things about Against The Odds magazine…do they do magazines in all their issues? I’ve started getting more interested in, and therefore buying more magazine game dictions…three guesses who”s to bale for that

Hi Em. Yes, off board artillery. As in the picture above. This is start of turn 2 after the Mutual Artillery Phase. Soviets doing a lot of bombarding (they can afford to) but not hitting much of anything.

Here we are at the end of turn two. It takes a good hour to get through a turn and a bit longer for me as I'm working my way through the rules. Artillery rules are a bit cumbersome as you have to keep track of points used per turn. And speaking of arty points the Soviets get close to 300 per turn while the Germans get 18 for the whole game. You would think the Soviet artillery alone would carry the day but not so.

The Buda side, congested slogging match as siege warfare usually is.

Buda side again, Soviets may be close to clearing out 2 zones. Germans blew the bridge in their zone over the Danube.

Seriously. There’s something weirdly satisfying about blowing up bridges! Great action in this game.

Didn't realize when I ordered the game it was a deluxe edition and came with a nice tray with clear cover and 2 D-10. Nice tray too, sturdy.

That tray is cool! Deluxe editions are always nice, aren’t they?!? …I’ve never owned one that wasn’t awesome. And great history shot of what the racetrack looks like today!
