As the title stated just trying some forced perspective pictures with my latest build. Monogram Revell Me109 G-10. An 80's kit that is still a beauty to build today, and still available. My kit was of an age it came with swastikas on the decal sheet. This is just a not very good picture taken against a sky scene on my lap top late last night before turning in.

Some 109 G10's were equiped with a methanol boost system that injected a 50/50 combination of methanol and water into the supercharger which supplied an instant boost of power. These aircraft used 96 octane fuel instead of 87, so ground crews would paint the landing gear red so they knew that these planes needed the higher octane fuel. I will grab a picture tonight to show how you can tell how to recognize these planes.

I know some sharp eye will realize I goofed and put the wrong decal on, but my mistake. And actually the decal sheet didn't have the correct decal anyway.

Oh, that’s fascinating on the red landing gear! …I never knew that.; and on the methanol…didn’t know that, as well! This has always been a favorite aircraft fighter of mine and I’m always excited to see builds of it. I wouldn’t sweat the decal… I believe in Artistic a license! The chipping on it is first class, mate…what method did you use?

It's not chipping it's a mottle camo pattern they would put on the sides, in this case Tamiya RLM Green I put on with a small piece of sponge, didn't come out exactly as planned but it's alright as far as I'm concerned.
I thought the red landing gear would make for a more interesting model and I am pleased with that. The methanol boost was needed for chasing B17's and B24's at high altitude.

The type of mottling I was trying to achieve, this on the G10 at EAA. Little hard to see.

As the methanol boost equipment was not part of the original design they ended up having to move the battery so they moved the battery up behind the pilots seat, that required the modification you see behind the pilots seat, that little shelf like piece sticking out. You will only find this on 109's with the booster system.

Ah, got’chya on the mottling! Thanks for those references shots. Yes, I agree with you, in liking your results…that’s a tough camo pattern to achieve without an airbrush. It strikes me that with wear and age on the battlefield, ground crews had to work with what they had and be open to what’s available so, that’s a very viable solution to me. Personally, I love the look!
Great background on the methanol boost… I had no idea about any of that!
