Saga.

Our club is starting a campaign for this great game which looks like a lot of fun. There are different era`s covered in Saga and I will be taking a force of Pagan Rus. Basically the vikings who settled in, or near, Russia. Mikleguard as it has been called in the histories. There are, at least, a couple of forces from a later era, the Crusades, one Christian, one Moslem. One of the great things about this game is that pretty much any force can take on any of the others without too much effort.

Unfortunately the Pagan Rus have a slightly different weapons choice to my old Viking force so I have had the get some more figures, ordering a few sprues online as I did not need to completely replace my entire force. I went with Victrix.

The army is great value but I did not need that many. These are great sculpts, and, although there are not many poses it is amazing what different combinations of arms and weapons can do

SAGA! …I’ve heard good things about this system… are you playing 1st or 2nd edition?

Damn, I replied to this a couple of days ago, hit post and left but I must have done something wrong .

Yeah, we are playing v2, a bit clearer than v1 but with one major gripe from me. Movement. All movement is now in a straight line which seems ridiculous as, if a Roman legion or a 18th century infantry square can wheel and manoever then a bunch of Viking raiders should be able to go round corners. This is my only problem, everything else has been improved or left alone.

I am loving the new Victrix sculpts, crisp, clean and with minimal mold lines, and, as I said surprisingly varied.

The sculpts of many of the miniatures on the market today are so amazing… wonderfully detailed and my very well be seeing a Golden Age. I think much of this is because of advanced production capabilities available today, including 3D printing.

The straight line movement seems very odd to me, as well… I wonder why they simplified that?

I bought into the Game of Thrones’, “Ice & Fire” miniatures system and they use large trays for movement, hits indicated by removing minis from the tray… it’s gonna take me a bit to fall in love with that, but I’m keeping an open mind.

I have been putting some of the guys together, and, watching a "how to" vid on youtube I see that there are recommended pairings for arms and torso`s. This is written on the bag the army comes in so I did not get that, but, a lot is obvious. A hauberk that goes to the shoulder needs a full arm and one that goes to the elbow needs a pair of forearms. Where you might have problems is more the command sprue where you have extra adornment with animal pelts and heads attached to helmets, but most of these I have now found have a sprue number with an "A" added for a specific add on.

A revised edition of the rules is now available with recent FAQs and revisions included which I have on order, though Gripping Beast are renowned for being slow sending stuff out so I am not holding my breath.

Ok, I`ll admit it. The hands and eyes are going and I just can`t freehand shields anymore. Even a basic geometric shape is coming out wrong so I bit the bullet and ordered some decals.

I went for the ones in the top left as some of the others had several of each design, and some were designed for a different companies minis. Just have to get a good solid coat of white over my botched painting now.

You’re not alone, mate… I can still handle the dexterity, but I find I’m using the magnifying head heart thing more. Glasses don’t help, either!
