I like this technique. I’m not likely to buy a hot wire foam cutter, as I don’t see myself making a lot of model dio bases, but you can buy foam at specific sizes and a lot of craft shops, no maybe even a store like Home Depot would cut up a sheet into a bunch of predetermined sized blocks.
This technique is also cool in that, the diorama block is wrapped in balsa wood; stained and varnished, this makes an uncommon but cool display platform.
