I started playing what I consider real Wargames back around 1987, while working as a Chief Draftsman at a packaging company in eastern Massachusetts. I worked in a small office with a fellow named Scott, that was the estimator for the company, his position working closely with mine, so we became pretty good friends. He was a wargamer, but loved all games. Finding out that I loved the game of RISK, we would setup the game and play at lunch, placing the game board on filling cabinets until the next day’s resumption.
One day, Scott was talking about his wargame collection, and mentioned the Avalon Hill game, Panzer Leader. I was intrigued and asked him to bring it in. It was love at first sight! He loaned me the rules over the weekend and we started playing it the following Monday. I was hooked!
There was a big game store in the Boston area, in those days when they sold tons of Wargames! …I bought Panzer Leader and Panzer Blitz, and it didn’t take long at all before I was back buying more. And more! Among those first games bought were Fortress Europa, Patton’s Best, RAID in St. Nazaire, and Pacific War: Struggle Against Japan. More would follow for the next 32 years, and continues.
I was dazzled by the hex & counter systems, and playing scenarios of history. My beginning games were primarily WWII, but an early purchase was Magic Realm, which is now a high-priced classic.
it was around 2007 that I got into wargaming miniatures, with Axis & Allies Miniatures. Miniatures has been a close second to boardgaming… I love the 3-D aspect of the genre and can “see” the battles better with them.
Wargaing has been a principle hobby of mine and wil remain so.
I started this by saying, ‘what I consider real Wargames’, because I did play games like RISK, the American Heritage series, Sub Search, Battleship, Stratego, Chess, and Tank Battle among the notables. Whereas they are technically a form of wargame, it’s debatable. If you consider those Wargames, then the clock moves back into the 1960’s!
