In the picture above, the British 4-5-7 Squad moved into a Stone Building, hex II8. That cost that unit 2 Movement Factors (MF) to do so. The Germans have two hexes of units that can see and have range to that British Squad: - 4-4-7 Squad with MMG and Leader in in hex LL5
- 4-4-7 Squad in hex LL7
What most systems call “Opportunity Fire”, is called “Defensive First Fire” (DFF) in Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit (ASLSK), which means a defender can halt movement of the enemy and fire at them before that enemy unit can move any farther. DFF is at full firepower (FP), with perhaps some variables to alter the final factor (e.g., Leadership Modifier, Terrain Effects Modifier, Non Assault Movement). Simple enough. The firing units’ hex is marked with a First Fire Marker. This is where it gets interesting! Say, that defending British unit survives that DFF attack; if it had moved into a 1 MF cost hex, that would be it. You see, it can’t be attacked more times that the cost it paid to move into that hex, so that’s just one fore attack that can be made for a 1 MF cost hex. But remember, it cost 2 MF to move into a building, so that British unit can be fired on a second time by that same enemy unit! Those German units in LL5 can do what’s called Subsequent First Fire, which is a second Fire attempt, but at 1/2 FP (provided that the target is not at a range greater than that to the closest enemy unit in LOS, not outside the firer’s normal range).
