This is the story of two games! I own the original 1984 Milton Bradley Master Game Series version of this game, my wife having bought it as a Christmas present for me (along with its counterparts, “Axis & Allies” and “Broadsides & Boarding Parties”. Love this series (I’m just missing “Showgun”), and they’ve gone up double+ their original $45 (I believe) price tag back in the day.
About 14 years later, attending Origins Game Faire expo in Columbus, Ohio, I played in a game of Eagle Gryphon Games’ new revamped version that you see here. I should have bought it then, but I’d already maxed myself out in suitcase space for the flight home, and I didn’t do shipping stuff back then. I’d see this game now and then, and the price raising every time! It became an entrant on my “Grail Game” list.
Noble Knight Games is having a 25th Anniversary Sale with 20% off most of their inventory, and this gem was eligible! I snagged it for $103.50, in Excellent/Near Mint condition, with mostly unpunched pieces and sealed cards. Pretty much like new.
This game is a remake of the 1984 classic that was part of Milton Bradley's Gamemaster Series. In this game you are one of many Roman generals vying for power in Imperial Rome, employing legions, cavalry, and catapults to reach your objectives.
This version of the game has two sets of rules, one set similar to the original version (except that it has fixed the broken catapult rules) and a new set of rules based on Martin Wallace's Struggle of Empires.
Re-implements:
Milton Bradley's Conquest of the Empire (1984)

I’m super excited to have added this to my collection! Even though I own the original, this one adds more updates and I sure don’t mind playing both! If I decide to sell my original at some point, I can likely recoup the money I spent on this and more.
