I’m keeping a close watch in an upcoming Kickstarter opportunity for a new Flying Pig Games gem: '85, Afghanistan: Graveyard of Empires. Coming later this year, maybe September, from Flying Pig Games! There’s not a lot being said at the time of this writing, as it is in design mode, but it appears to be along the lines of their Vietnam game, ‘65, which is a squad-level, tactical game, which featured large counters and a card-driven mechanic, using a system similar to Flying Pig’s, “Night of Man”. The cards in ‘65 simplify the game, containing much of the data needed to play, which works very well! I like a system where you don’t have to bury your face in a rulebook more than you actually play. FPG’s should just take my money now… I’ll be pledging! As an aside, I always shoot for being in the fort to pledge zone to get the perks, but the KickStarter is maddening impossible to find when going live until we’ll after it goes live! …I still can’t get that timing right!

I think so, too! I love that this is more on the modern side, though “modern” in today’s Wargames seem to only make it to the early to mid 1980’s …it’s rare to make it to even the 1990’s, and here we are living in 2022! The game this takes it’s roots from is ‘65, and though I am greatly coming to appreciate the Vietnam conflict, I do like to fight with nearer current weaponry/tech. I remember when ‘65 came out, I wasn’t exactly clamoring to jump onboard with the system, as so much of it was foreign to what I was used to — particularly stalling my interest in buying was the super large counters! …now, I am reveling in large counters I love the scale of this game…you’re down on the ground with squads, not super large-scope hundreds and thousands of combatants. I find the scale more intimate and thrilling in conceptualization. You can smell sweat and blood, versus the dust and bird bellies from a few hundred feet up in the air looking down! …oh, and GREAT cover art, too!
