I have a stock of these that I found works wonderful for DIY and Print ‘n Play game counters. Just the right thickness to stand up to gluing counter artwork on, I’ve used these for my Battlestar Galactica space combat miniatures game, the old Lock ‘N Load Band of Heroes demo, etc. They look like this… Current price is about $45 for a box, but that’s at today’s inflation prices. A search of pressboard may turn up cheaper alternatives.

What do you use to cut this with? I personally use, Kuhn Rikon kitchen shears, which my wife bought from QVC. Mine have a grip guard all the way around the handles, which is nice… Kuhn Rikon may still sell them. As far as these QVC ones, it may seem a bit high priced at about $38, but you get a set of 4, so it comes out to about $10 a scissors unit. Karen gave me a pair for my hobbies and we keep a pair for packages and such, especially clam shell packages. She’s used them in kitchen prep… they cut chicken bone! Oddly enough, they cut thin paper badly, but thick cardboard is no problem at all! The thick cardstock these folders are made from need some strong grip pressure, but it cuts true and straight right through. I would suppose regular scissors would work, but they’d need to be very sharp and sturdy. They’re worth the price in my view, ‘cause you get four! But if I were buying a new set today, I’d probably go with these from Amazon, Crescent Wiss 11" Multi-Purpose Cutter - MPX5 …a smidge under $14!

Interesting, thanks. Probably better than a rolling cutter.

Interesting, thanks. Probably better than a rolling cutter. Much… more control. I did all my Battlestar Galactica tokens that way…I’ll try and snap a pic tomorrow

OMG, thanks for posting this and linking to it in a recent post! Never thought I'd get very interested in making counters, but you got me thinking about it in the past week! And this looks pretty easy!

OMG, thanks for posting this and linking to it in a recent post! Never thought I'd get very interested in making counters, but you got me thinking about it in the past week! And this looks pretty easy! You’re welcome! …and yes, super easy to assemble with an Elmer’s glue stick (jumbo) and a good pair of scissors, though on the latter, the scissors will need to be cleared later down the line sometime cause of glue buildup if you don’t let the counters cure overnight. I was worried the cardboard would curl a bit from the scissors’ cuts, but they don’t. The thickness is just right for my tastes, but I could see some people wanting a double layer for extra thickness…some gamers like super thick counters (…I don’t).
