Oh my!!! Barbarossa! “…and then the Winter came”…that is a GEM! The original cadre that worked on that game are Legends, and so is this game. I see based on the picture that you own the 2nd Edition (1978), which has been on my radar for a long time… I almost snagged one from Crazy Igor’s at Origins 2007, but it sold when I got back with the cash from my room. One of thr nicest looking box art and components of the Classics. Avalon Hill had it listed as as very accessible, complexity-wise, and it’s a game I see played a LOT! I’m gonna love to see pics in action! It’s one of the most popular Wargames ever. Did you know that Compass Games brought this one back to life in a whole new remake of the original 1974 Jedko game edition? I was planning to pick this up at Compass Games Expo this November (they typically sell all their games that are currently in stock at 50% off!).

It's nice seeing this game getting the respect due it. Did the Compass game come out yet?
This game has sat on a top shelf in the closet now for 15-20 years. A lot of memories came out with this game. I sat in the basement of the old house we lived in after just getting married, I played 3 or 4 games that winter sitting by the wood stove.
Tomorrow night the balloon will go up and the Panzers will cut into Russian occupied Poland. Looking forward to it.

I mean, that’s what this hobby is all about for us long haulers, isn’t it? …strong and resonant memories of gaming past, gaming present, and what’s on the shelf! As to the Compass version, yes, it came out last year (2021), I believe late in the year, and promptly sold out. It’s currently in reprinting and scheduled (but we all know those get bumped up on every game manufacturer these days) for a July release. The price of last years’ was actually amazing… under $60 …I was shocked at that and really almost pulled the trigger in that, but I’m a cheap bastard! …I’ll hope to see it in November at Compass and snag it for $30! (…I’ll keep you in mind!)

That’s some timeliness in starting this scenario!!! Love that board! …old school still holds up! I’m excited to see you get this on the table.

I am loving the old school look and feel of this one, also it's total 6 pages of rules.
I'm 4 months in and about all the Soviets can do so far is give up casualties and ground yet they can still muster enough forces to patch holes in their lines. As for the Germans Army Group South (right side of map) is becoming a bit over extended as all German units must stay within 8 hexes of it's HQ or is eliminated if more. The Russians are holding strong in front of the Pripet Marsh (blue area in middle map) which is holding the Germans back. Army Group North continues it's slower but methodical offensive operations on the left side.
It's fall now and conditions are light mud reducing Stuka attacks from 3 to 1 and also reduces most units movement factors during their second impulse, some units can not move at all. The Germans will miss those 2 Stuka attacks, as for winter months there are none.

The out of command units becoming eliminated units is something I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before. I guess at this grander scale, and the overall combat conditions the game projects, those units would be essentially lost. Interesting!
