Tried my first game of Mike Lambo's The Race For Bastogne. Lost this time around but will be back for more. This is a roll and write game but it does come with counters you need to mount and cut out, counters are only one sided so no big deal. Sherman's are your main attackers, Greyhounds are best for reconnaissance and your Priest has the ability to "pop" smoke in it's hex or one adjacent, where the Priest really shines is as support artillery in the attack but it needs to be two hexes away from the hex under attack to contribute it's modifier which is +2 to the attacking units attack roll, +3 if on a hill. Whenever you become adjacent to a ? mark on the map you roll for the enemy, PzIV, Panther, Tiger or minefield. I got pretty bottled up by infantry and a PzIV which destroyed my Sherman sending it back to the start line to move up again into the fray. Orders are by rolling three d6 and consulting orders charts for the Americans as for the Germans a lot depends on how the Americans are deployed against them. A lot goes on in this small 5 hex by 6 hex map. It's not very easy to get things to go your way, ideally moving in for a rear shot on the German armor. You also fire head on and flank. For $15.00 well worth a look.

I like the B&W cover photos on these games.

Turn 4 of mission 2. Rolled orders to use my Greyhound on a recon of a objective hex at 2 hex's revealing a Panther in the woods. Order roll for Sherman was 1,6,6. Ones are reverse, move, or turn and a six is attack. So I moved my Sherman into the village and using the 1 roll then used one of the 6# to attack revealed Panther, and because the Priest is two hexes from the battle adds it firepower to help knockout the Panzer. Now when the Sherman moved into the village it activates the ? mark hex to it's immediate front, the Sherman still has one 6 or attack roll and engages the infantry unit just revealed and because the Priest is 2 hex's away can again add its firepower (2) to the attack taking out the infantry. The Priest does not need an order roll to lend it's support in an attack.

WOW, sweet game! I am really starting to get into these roll and write book games. The subject of them came up at the Compass Games, Thursday night company town hall meeting (I attend in YouTUBE) and the owner Bill Thomas mentioned that he has no idea what they are and doesn’t like the concept; to which several attendees (including me) spoke up and said they were fun as hell, and tough to win!
Anyway, I’ve been wondering about this particular game and am glad you’re showing it to us. Anything Ardennes is right in my wheelhouse anyway, so this peaked my interest when I heard about it, and I’ve been meaning to look it up on YouTUBE. I like the Priest, with its support capabilities, and having to place it 2 hexes out minimum… at this scale, that makes total sense…and I like how you don’t have to roll for its action.
I also like the Event style of these games, where things activate out of no where… to me, that’s real good Fog of War mechanics, and this game seems to shine on that count! Greta that it comes with markers, too! …they look quite nice!
I’ll probably pick this up in time.

An enjoyable game for sure and happy he added counters. I was thinking that I have everything needed in 6mm except the Greyhound and the Priest, I have an M36 tank destroyer I suppose I could use in place of the Priest, with a little imagination not sure about the Greyhound but any halftrack would work.

Great idea! I’d go with GHQ Micro Armor… www.ghqmodels.com/products/m7-priestwww.ghqmodels.com/products/m8-greyhound

GHQ is the best in 6mm imo. I sooooo agree with that! They’ve been around a long time, and their company ethic is top notch. It always amazes me, the amount of detail they can get in 6mm. Painting the little suckers tales some mad skills, though.
