Covering the Lock ‘N Load Tactical game, Heroes of the Gap, the v4.1 rules are the closest thing to the v5.1 full Tactical System rules you can still get for free which hovers around HotG. Clocking in at around 53 pages, the good news is: 1. It has big font and great examples that fill up the book, compared to older style manuals with smaller type, so it’s more of an easier read than the bulk would suggest; and 2. It’s a third the length of the full v5.1 Tactical Rules. To play Heroes of the Gap, it’s still a good idea to look at the Module Specific rules if you can, which are just 6-pages long. See here for the whole enchilada v5.1 Core Handbook — if you dare!!!

So for what it’s worth, I spent a couple days looking at the v4.1 Modern Era Core Rulebook… then, went a started looking at the v5.1 Core Handbook: most definitely go with the v5.1! Yeah, it’s 3x longer, but it’s waaaaaaay better! Not only does it contain the latest up-to-date revisions and clarifications, it makes the game miles more playable. Trust me… I was one of the people that was annoyed with the new core rules, and reluctant to switch (a true Pieces!), but I see the light! I am a believer! I’ve drunk the Koolaid!

I believe you, but 3x longer?? It’s a weird next level the company went… it’s basically the same rulebook, but has some changes that made the system better (those changes are in blue type in v5.1). And it made some clarifications, which really bulked up the page count, but where it really added to the number of pages is a TON of examples and diagrams. So, v4.1 is fine to be the learning tome, especially if you look for the blue in v5.1… but what I started to realize was, for me, I’m gonna play the hell out of the system this November at the Connecticut, Compass Games Expo with a buddy in November, and probably a lot before, and he used the v5.0 version so, I might as well go whole hog, haha. In the end, you could even use the old first rules, which were like 20 pages and play the system fine… anyone you’d play with the changes would be by mutual agreement in old system, or being taught the changes as you play. saying all that, this is exactly why I hate when game companies change their rule sets… it makes it difficult playing people that like other versions. Me… I’m pretty open

So maybe it's not so bad.
