TRIPODS
I was getting the suspicion I may need more Tripods, and since they move in groups of three per Cylinder (and the Cylinders move in groups of three, as well), it makes sense to keep the concept of a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Cylinder Formation structure… the key may be in “Formations”. An initial idea would have been to have the possibility of any number of total formations as needed, as determined by playtesting to see how many are too many or too few.
Therefore, an idea would be to have Formations visually identified on each group of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tripods counters, such as…
…the trick would be in having to either do them by hand (hard, but ultimately easier), or via graphics on computer (fraught with resizing issues). More thought needs to go into this.
So, currently, I have 122 counters made and corner rounded, as well as having as part of that, one more 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Cylinder batches of three Tripods each. I’ve been wrestling with how to handle the Tripods count: The original concept had three Cylinders (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), with three Tripods each; the three and three matches the movies.
But I kept wondering if nine Tripods would be adequate… especially in he 2005 Spielberg film, they move in larger groups in a city or town-sized area. They may be fine for any one scenario, but I am not really sure it will be, so I initially made a second set; and now, I this third set.
I am now, thinking of it in terms of them landing in areas in Waves. Each wave will have three (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) Wave Cylinder Formation marker, corresponding to three Tipods in each Cylinder formation. The scenarios can be written in terms of Wave(s) used, and this could be especially beneficial in terms of campaigns or super-sized scenarios. Of course, that brings about the issue of identification between and one 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Cylinder and respective Tripods… so, I was initially planning to hand draw Formation Symbols on the Formation Markers, and to the left of each Tripod on the status bar (both sides), but that was just too much work. I was thinking of remaking the counters with symbols made with the computer, but that’s also a bit too much work at this juncture for a variant in such early stages… so in the end, I decided to go with something simple, along the idea of dots as Wave symbols…
The next stage will be getting them on a mapboard and fleshing things out. Among the first things to test out will be, how many Tripods are needed for any one particular battle.
