They look great, very professional finish! I really like the way they came out overall, and the bases tie in nicely with the American units. I think I’d still like to get a little grass on the bases; and I’m not sure if the VC need a little more dusting/weathering effect. I’m going to start on the four Americans’ profile charts/player aids soon.

Been stalled a bit on the project, due to sciatica sidelining me for the past month and a half, as well as family obligations with Karen’s mom; and throw in a couple health scares for Karen and me, which resolved themselves wonderfully, thank goodness! But I’ve had this game in the back of my mind. I’ve come up with a solid plan to add character sheets for the combatants, which will give some back story color commentary, as well as be player aids with game mechanics for each. Also on the workbench, are a box of the UH-1 Huey Helicopter Platoon (TUBX07), made by Battlefront, for the “Team Yankee”, WWIII miniatures gaming system. Pretty much the same era Huey as Vietnam with the look and allow what I need to happen scenarios-wise. This box contains two plastic UH-1 Huey helicopters, two plastic flight stands, eight rare-earth magnets, one decal sheet and two unit cards. I will of course, be able to use these with the Team Yankee system, which I own a substantial collection of miniatures and rulebooks/supplements… however, I bought these for use with my miniatures game, The Legion: Rumble in the Jungle. These helicopters fit in perfectly with the 15mm Old Glory miniatures of Vietnamese Viet Cong and American U.S. Army “Green Berets” (a.k.a, The Legion), which I based and hand painted. The thought behind the Huey’s is for use with evac at the end of some scenarios, or maybe even a downed rescue mission. Rather than just make it to the map top and hop off, I thought it’d be cool to have The Legion hit an LZ, sometimes hot and a danger to the helicopter…just nice, added tension!

Thanks… yeah, it’ll add a bit more depth and variation on scenario writing; when I’d move my troopers to the exit row, it kinda felt anti climactic… I guess you could look at it as, after the scenario play, it was assumed they’d been boogied out, but I like the chance (tension) that even though they reached the target tile row, they may be whacked before the cavalry came to get them! And yeah, both Karen and I are doing much better, thanks… some scary times there.

Cool idea, I can already see a scenario with a member of the legion popping smoke for a rescue/med evac mission. This game is coming along famously! I really must congratulate you Em.

It’s a fun project!!! …so the Huey’s need building and paint, still… got sidetracked with other life stuff, where we’re finally making headway with the handoff of mom in law’s affairs with the State pay system, since her finances are nearly exhausted (we’ve been desperately trying not to get ensnared with too much of our personal funds taking too bad a hit); but in better news, my Physical Therapy is going great and I’m getting back towards better strength levels. I’ve been drafting up some ideas for the character cards, to see if that’s a viable route to better track the four main American Forces characters, and I’ve some ideas I want to start sketching out for cartoon art mug shots. I’m trying to keep these relatively small so they don’t take up a ton of game table space. I’ve been itching to play some more scenarios… I haven’t had this game on the table since when, Spring?!? …gosh, I can’t recall, which just won’t do, lol!

As mentioned, I’ll be doing character cards for the Americans… small player aids, actually, such as tracking Wounded status; but mainly, because this is a Character-driven game in large part, and those cards will help introduce who these American warriors and who they are, with their strengths and weakness, and quirks and foibles. One of the (most likely) obvious things that becomes possible with having this is, writing up narratives in online after action report posts, but could also be used in writing small story snippets within those kind of posts.
Saying all that, I just want to mention how inspiration comes out of the blue from many sources. A fella names Joe over at Modeler’s Social Club complimented the use rubber key rings for helping distinguish the different American team members, and how I found them being a good find. In my response, in part I said…
In the quote (above) from that forums’ post, the part in regular type is already part of the game and how I’ve been testing it out. The part in bold is new as of the very moment I typed it there this morning, and have not been playing it out that way!
One of the characters (Sergeant “Ziggy” Zigarelli, with the Yellow band), is kinda nuts and plays more aggressively… that wasn’t planed in my playtesting, but something that just developed out of nowhere while I was playing. That little interaction with Joe fleshed out that it should indeed be part of the (or another) character play! …and the other bit only one character having better medic training and doesn’t have to roll for successful healing, and the roll for timid/aggressive on the green character are game mechanics that transpired due to Joe. That kind of thing happens here all the time, too.
Game design revolves around inspiration — either your own, or a nudge from someone else, or some “borrowed” bits. No one teaches this stuff, lol… well, no one I know, anyway. But that’s why I like designing games… even if they are never published, it’s the thrill of the creative endeavor! And intersections with friends and colleagues.
