Having decided to give COMBAT STORM a try, I now embark on assembling the components to play this miniatures game version of using the little green army men of old… well, actually of new, as this is using today’s tech and accessories, and being in a modern combat setting. See here for the actual game system, which I purchased today. First up, I need men! My first step after ordering the rules system was to place an order for a package of modern American United States Army soldiers. There’s a bunch of WWII figures out there on the open market, and a smattering of Korean War and Vietnam-era…but modern was surprisingly hard to find. I was lucky to find Wankko 2-Inch Plastic Army Men Action Figures to serve as my U.S. Army soldiers, which come in 10 Unique Sculpts, within a pack of 100. There are four colors to choose from, but I chose green. I plan to paint these anyway so in the end, so color wasn’t too important to me. The other consideration was, as there are two sides in the system, U.S. Army and People’s Coalition Front… I want two sets of soldiers, so the search for the PCF forces ensues!

My find Wankko 2-Inch Plastic Army Men Action Figures came in, and oh my goodness are they gorgeous! These are far superior to the little green army men I bought as a kid (though those early versions were better than some of the Dollar Store stuff I saw, so, it’s all in your perspective, right?!?). I’ll post some pics when I open up the package. Even though I knew they were 2” figures, my senses were still a bit rattled at their actual size, but in a good way! These may be too big for the miniature vehicles I have in 28mm, and may have to look into alternatives for vehicles, but I’m OK with scale differences I the vehicles, as it’ll likely be fairly doable in viewing.
As an aside, I did order some base disks, but they were way off! For these Wankko minis, I’d need at least double the diameter of the disks I bought! That said, the narrow bases in the figures are actually quite meaty, width-wise, so they are probably stable enough as is. If so, that’s one less thing I’d have to not do to get playing sooner.

Next up, “The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming!” …well, actually, they’re here! I ordered a pack of BMC Classic Marx Russian Plastic Army Men, which are actually WWII soldiers, but I could not find anything modern to represent the PFC, so I figured I’d try this 36-figure pack on for size and see what a good paint job could do to give a modern look. The weaponry may be off, but hey, maybe the PFC isn’t equipped as well as the Russian Army, right?!? At the same competitive size as my US soldiers these 2” tall Russians match up well, from an cross inspection bag to bag (I didn’t open them yet). These will do nicely! With this purchase, I’ll see how they match up once out of the bag… if they work out, I’ll order a couple more bags so I have close to the same amount as my American soldiers… better to have more too, since the sculpts are in different poses and it gives me optimal selection. I’ll match them up against the largest miniature vehicles I own too, and see of I need to find bigger ones at some point.

Brings back memories of Christmas morning. Do the figures seem sturdy? The original Marx soldiers could go through hell and back.

Brings back memories of Christmas morning. Do the figures seem sturdy? The original Marx soldiers could go through hell and back. I’ve not taken them out of the package yet but, they do seem quite sturdy… in the bag, they feel like the ones I played with as a kid, but they’re MUCH BIGGER! …about 2” +/- depending on pose. The detail is actually better than the ones 60 years ago… clearly and cleanly molded pockets, canteens, guns, faces, etc. Both of these manufacturers offer much better detail than some of the other company varieties I was exploring (…many companies have inferior sculpts, like legs that are too skinny, and muddled detail).
